Boldt Facilities Progress Review
Boldt Facilities Progress Review - for the Thousand Island Sun
Heart Island, Alexandria Bay, NY – The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority, owners of historic Boldt Castle and the Boldt Yacht House opens the 2012 season for Boldt Castle on Heart Island on Saturday, May 12th. The facility will remain open daily through October 14, 2012. Thousands of visitors come to the 1000 Islands every year and make Boldt Castle and the Boldt Yacht House a scheduled stop on their vacation itinerary.
These premier 1000 Islands attractions with their fascinating historic structures, scenic views, beautiful gardens and grounds, always have something new to unveil for their visitors each season. Commencing with the 2012 season visitors will be presented with a new movie theater located on the second floor of Boldt Castle. The theater room created by Boldt Facility staff is itself a remarkable interpretation of the 1000 Islands’ gilded age and the newly produced movie entertains and translates this era through the life and times of George Boldt, Boldt Castle and the 1000 Islands International Region.
With completion of the new Boldt Castle Theater Room the Authority continues to accomplish never before finishes to historic Boldt Castle. George C. Boldt had halted all construction on his Grand Island home in 1904 at the untimely death of his wife Louise, inconsolable Mr. Boldt never to resume construction thereafter.
The completion of the Theater Room will add to the many interior improvements witnessed over the years including the Boldt Castle Library, Ballroom, Billiards Room, Reception Room, Dining Room, Grand Staircase, Elevator, Stain Glass Dome, Boldt family bedroom suites, marble flooring and ornate plaster treatments along with many period furnishings.
Located directly across the water from Boldt Castle on Wellesley Island is the magnificent Boldt Yacht House. First opened to the public in 1996 by the Authority, the Boldt Yacht House is the last and largest remaining Yacht House on the St. Lawrence River. The Boldt Yacht House contains a number of antique boats, some of which were originally owned by George C. Boldt. 2009 witnessed the arrival of the steam yacht Kestrel, built in 1892 and donated to the Boldt Yacht House by Mr. John Luhrs of Luhrs Marine. The Kestrel is 63’ long with a 12 ½’ beam and typifies the steam yachts of George Boldt’s era. The first floor living quarters of the Boldt Yacht House are also open for viewing providing visitors with an exceptional experience as they tour this very special river landmark. The Boldt Yacht House contains antique boats, many displays, signs and pictures of boating and yachting on the St. Lawrence River. The Boldt Facilities work closely with the Antique Boat Museum, Clayton, NY to exhibit and showcase a collection of antique boats representing a grand era of boating on the St. Lawrence River.
In 2011 the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the former Blue Heron Marine (now known as Boldt Landing) located on the eastern end of Wellesley Island. The acquisition of the marina and its sizeable working shop was made in part to better sustain ongoing rehabilitation efforts, maintenance and business operations at the Boldt facilities simultaneously safeguarding the historic Boldt Yacht House by moving all shop equipment and maintenance activities out from this historic structure. The vacated area will now open more of this landmark structure to public visitation with a planned turn of the century (1900) boat and wood working shop exhibit.
During the Authority’s 35 years of ownership of the former Boldt properties on Heart Island and the Boldt Yacht House on Wellesley Island, nearly 34 million dollars have been invested in rehabilitation efforts and improvements. At the same time the Boldt Facilities have hosted over 1,000 weddings and have counted over 6 million visitors to these historic properties providing incalculable value to the 1000 Islands International Tourism Industry.
